The Institute of Education Sciences will host its Fifth Annual IES Research Conference at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. The theme for this year's conference is Connecting Research, Policy and Practice.

A block of rooms has been reserved at a special conference rate of $226.00 per night (plus all applicable taxes). Please contact the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center to book your reservation at 301-965-4000. Program Information

Day 1: Monday, June 28, 2010
The conference will begin with on-site registration and check-in from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and will include afternoon meetings conducted by IES program officers. A welcome reception and the first poster session scheduled for the conference will follow these meetings. Conference attendees will be able to view all poster presentations, which will feature the research of predoctoral fellows, postdoctoral fellows, grant and contract awardees, and expert data users.

Day 2: Tuesday, June 29, 2010
The second day of the conference will begin with on-site registration, check-in, and an opening plenary session. Concurrent panel sessions featuring presentations by IES grantees and contractors, as well as other invited speakers, will follow these events. A plated lunch with a plenary speaker will follow the morning sessions. The afternoon agenda will continue with the second poster session, followed by concurrent panel sessions, and will conclude with the third and final poster session scheduled for the conference. In addition to the scheduled poster sessions, attendees will be able to view all poster presentations featuring the research of predoctoral fellows, postdoctoral fellows, grant and contract awardees, and expert data users from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Day 3: Wednesday, June 30, 2010
The final day of the conference will open with concurrent panel sessions, followed by another round of concurrent panel sessions. The conference will adjourn at 12:15 p.m. Posters will be available for viewing from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Transportation


Air Transportation
Three airports serve the Washington, DC, area: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). DCA is a 15-minute drive from the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center and is the most conveniently located of the three.

The Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center offers an hourly shuttle service between the hotel and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). Rates for this service and shuttles to the other airports are as follows:

  • DCA: $18 person one way; $34 roundtrip; $78 for full 10-person van
  • IAD: $43 person one way; $85 round trip; $125 for full 10-person van
  • BWI: $43 person one way; $86 round trip; $125 for full 10-person van

Average taxi fares from area airports to the Gaylord are as follows:

  • DCA: $20.00 to $25.00
  • IAD: $60.00 to $65.00
  • BWI: $70.00 to $75.00

Train Transportation
Train arrivals are conducted through Union Station.

Taxi fares from Union Station to the Gaylord average $25.00 to $28.00. Shuttle service is also available (see the information under Downtown Shuttle Sevice below).

Downtown Shuttle Service
The Gaylord offers hourly shuttle service from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Union Station (pick up in 3rd lane of Columbus Circle) and the Old Post Office (Pennsylvania Avenue and 12th Streets, NW—in front of the Ben Franklin statue). Rates:

  • One way ticket is $13.00
  • Round trip ticket is $20.00
  • Unlimited three day pass is $49.00

Metrorail
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Metrorail system is a convenient way to travel within and around the DC area. The Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center offers a shuttle service to three stops on the metro line: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), Union Station and King Street in Alexandria. Please click here for additional WMATA information. One way ticket is $5.00 per person. Metrorail farecards may also be purchased at the Gaylord National Transportation Desk located on the Lobby level.

Parking Rates

  • Hotel self-parking fee: $19.00/day (Attendees will receive a 20% discount during the conference dates.)
  • Hotel valet parking fee: $28.00/day

Water Taxi
Potomac Riverboat Company's water taxis depart regularly from the pier of the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center, offering convenient transportation to Old Town Alexandria, Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens, and the historic neighborhood of Georgetown.
