Title: Think Facts Math Game for Single Digit Operational Fluency
Center: NCSER Year: 2012
Principal Investigator: Ginsburg, Herbert Awardee: Teachley, LLC
Program: Small Business Innovation Research in Special Education      [Program Details]
Award Period: 6 months Award Amount: $150,000
Type: Phase I Development Award Number: EDIES12C0046
Description:

Purpose: In this Phase 1 project, the researchers developed a prototype of a game to help students learn math. An estimated five to eight percent of elementary school students have some form of memory or cognitive deficit that inhibits learning basic math. Researchers have identified several areas where children with math learning difficulties struggle. These include a strong sense of number facts to quickly and accurately perform operations on single digit numbers, the use of strategies to solve problems which have not yet been memorized, an ability to figure out whether or not an answer is reasonable, and self-monitoring to assess one's own efficacy and understanding.

Project Activities: This project team developed a prototype of a math game application (app) for touch-screen tablets to support grade school students with major learning difficulties in practicing and learning number facts, strategies, and number sense. The final game app prototype was adaptive in nature and provided feedback to teachers to inform practice. Pilot research at the end of the Phase I development demonstrated that the software prototype functioned as planned and the game was engaging and was used by students with learning difficulties.
