Regional Educational Laboratory Program

Expanding an Existing Database of Dropout Prevention Programs

Region:
Mid-Atlantic
Abstract:
Dropping out of high school is associated with numerous deleterious effects, including lower personal income, decreased job opportunities, impaired health, increased likelihood of reliance on welfare, and increased likelihood of involvement in criminal activities. There is evidence that some programs and policies can help students stay in school and progress, but there is no documentation as to whether districts in the Mid-Atlantic Region are using them. This project is designed to expand a searchable database of dropout programs in mid-sized, urban school districts to include the Mid-Atlantic region. The report will detail dropout program information on target audiences, prevention strategies, age ranges, in-school and out-of-school staff involvement, and whether programs were reviewed by the What Works Clearinghouse.
