Director, REL CentralDr. Louis Cicchinelli, Director of REL Central, is the Executive Vice President of Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL). He received his Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Denver. For more than 30 years, the needs of children have been the focus of his work. He oversees the Central Region Educational Laboratory (REL Central), which is sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences at the U.S. Department of Education. In this role, he is responsible for directing, coordinating, and ensuring the quality of REL Central's research, technical assistance, and evaluation work. Dr. Cicchinelli has designed a nationwide study of curriculum-based reform and its impact on districts and schools, and participated in the development of McREL's national survey of the American public about the importance of various educational standards. He has also worked with McREL staff to develop a comprehensive school reform program for local agencies and schools.
As a cognitive psychologist, researcher, and evaluator, Dr. Cicchinelli has conducted numerous program and policy evaluations of education and social systems. He has worked extensively in the areas of human cognitive processes; learning and performance; and technology transfer, adoption, and utilization. He has applied his research and evaluation skills in the areas of K-16 education, military and civilian training systems, child welfare, and mental health.
