At a time when national attention has focused on grounding education policy and practice in research, there is a need for increasing the nation's capacity to conduct rigorous education research. To increase the supply of scientists and researchers in education who are prepared to conduct rigorous evaluation studies, develop new products and approaches that are grounded in a science of learning, design valid tests and measures, and explore data with sophisticated statistical methods, NCER supports postdoctoral fellowships with academic mentors conducting research in the education sciences.

Beginning in 2005, the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) has funded universities to establish Postdoctoral Interdisciplinary Research Training Programs in the Education Sciences. These programs receive support from the Institute to collectively produce a cadre of education researchers capable of and willing to conduct a new generation of methodologically rigorous and educationally relevant scientific research that will provide solutions to pressing problems and challenges facing American education. Fellows completing these training programs will be prepared to contribute to the field of education sciences by conducting rigorous evaluation studies, developing new products and approaches that are grounded in a science of learning, and designing valid tests and measures.
