Coaching Education Leaders
There is a pressing demand for schools to improve academic knowledge and skills, as well as to ensure that students complete high school with the skills necessary for success in the workplace or in postsecondary education. In today’s high-stakes accountability environment, a prime responsibility of school principals is to ensure that their schools reach these goals. Leadership coaching has emerged as one approach for improving the skills of school leaders. Although leadership coaching interventions vary, typically coaches act as mentors, helping principals establish goals, priorities, and school improvement plans, and providing feedback on job-related tasks and skills. Little empirical evidence exists, however, that links coaching of school leaders to increased student achievement and improvement on other dimensions of school operation. NCER currently supports two projects on the development and evaluation of coaching programs for education leaders (click on the links below to learn more). For its research program on education leadership, NCER solicits research on different approaches for improving education leadership and for assessing the quality of education leaders.
