The Role of Effect Size in Conducting, Interpreting, and Summarizing Single-Case Research
The field of education is increasingly committed to adopting evidence-based practices. Although randomized experimental designs provide strong evidence of the causal effects of interventions, they are not always feasible. For example, depending upon the research question, it may be difficult for researchers to find the number of children necessary for such research designs (e.g., to answer questions about impacts for children with low-incidence disabilities). A type of experimental design that

A d-Estimator for Single Case Designs
Although a number of methods exist for analyzing data from single-case designs, none yields an effect size estimator that is comparable to the commonly used effect size statistics in between-groups designs like the standardized mean difference statistic. This project developed such a d-statistic (represented as d) for single-case designs that is comparable to and in the same metric as the d-statistic from a between-groups experiment. This statistic will allow researchers to assess effects fr...

Meta-Analysis of Single-Subject Designs
The purpose of this project is to develop meta-analytic methods for synthesizing one kind of nonrandomized experiment, the single-subject design. These designs are widely used in educational research settings (Kazdin, 2003; Kratochwill & Levin, 1992), and are among the strongest nonrandomized experiments (Shadish, Cook & Campbell, 2002). Although meta-analysis has been applied comparatively rarely to these designs, sufficient literature exists to believe that the time is propitious for fur...
