Multi-Scale Visualization of National and State NAEP Data through Interactive Graphics

Abstract: The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has collected data for over 35 years and the resulting databases are a powerful resource for primary users for analysis and reporting The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 now requires that states and school districts that want to receive Title 1 funds must participate in specific NAEP assessments The implementation of the NCLB provisions by the participating states has led to acceleration in the utilization of NAEP data, especially from its state component, to inform states about the status of their students. Users of this data will need tools in order to understand the collected data in varying contexts.

This project will provide a user-friendly, easily accessible data visualization environment that allows users to explore state NAEP data via interactive graphics while providing a standard point of access using Web-based technology so that users can replicate other users' results or make comparisons between results from two different analyses. The program is designed to minimize learning curves. It uses dynamic scatterplots to compare results from two states of choice on two selected subjects. Students are grouped by demographic and other important contextual variables. Accordingly, the program will allow users to compare data across states and explore unusual patterns between student demographics, study habits, family background, and ethnicity across different subjects and time points in a highly interactive visual display.
