Description: | In a prior SBIR project (EDIES17C0030), the small business developed Moby.Read, a tablet-based speech recognition app that grade school students use to self-administer oral-reading fluency assessments. In this project, the team will develop a new prototype component to extract more diagnostic detail on reading difficulties as students read passages. The Phase I prototype will include a natural language processing algorithm aligned to four new passages that students read. At the end of Phase 1, in a research study with 110 grade 4 students, researchers will examine whether the prototype is feasible to use, whether students can complete reading assessment tasks independently, and whether the prototype generates relevant diagnostic information on student reading skills.
