SUMMARY:Assisting Struggling Students with Mathematics: What Works for Tier
ed Interventions in Elementary and Middle Schools
DESCRIPTION:Time: 2:00- 3:00 p.m. Location: Virtual Description: The strate
gies communicated in this webinar will help those who provide math interve
ntion to understand evidence-based strategies for effectiveness. Access to
course pathways and STEM careers is often dependent on students' success
in Algebra I (Snipes &amp\; Finklestein\, 2015). Starting as early as kind
ergarten\, math instruction should focus on concepts and skills that will
prepare students for success in algebra\, with a particular focus on whole
numbers and rational numbers in grades 4-8 (National Mathematics Advisory
Panel\, 2008). In addition to focused instruction\, students need access
to interventions to address mathematics difficulties that could prevent su
ccess in algebra (National Mathematics Advisory Panel\, 2008). This webina
r will present research-based approaches to assisting students who are str
uggling in math\, focusing on recommendations from an Institute of Educati
on Sciences (IES) practice guide (Gersten et al.\, 2009)\, with specific e
xamples of instructional strategies related to those recommendations (Doug
 herty\, Bryant\, Bryant\, Darrough\, &amp\; Pfannenstiel\, 2015). Audience
: This webinar will be for a national audience that includes school distri
ct personnel\, teacher coaches\, administrators\, and teachers in elementa
ry and middle schools who want to improve mathematics instruction for stru
ggling students. Other interested parties may include state education agen
cy (SEA) staff. The audience will be recruited through website announcemen
ts and emails to the REL Central's email list. Invitations will also be em
ailed to district mathematics coordinators\, leaders of state mathematics
teacher professional organizations\, and university personnel assigned to
mathematics programs\, as suggested by SEA contacts. Speakers: Russell Ger
