Resource roundup for early childhood educators

Did you know that the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) network and the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) have resources for early childhood teachers and administrators? We've rounded up recent resources that can help you support young learners, with a focus on mathematics instruction, school readiness, and kindergarten entry assessments.

Mathematics instruction in early childhood

  • The WWC developed a practice guide, Teaching Math to Young Children, that features five recommendations that teachers and administrators can easily put into practice.
    • Short on time? Check out the Educator Practice Guide Summary [882 KB ] for highlights from the practice guide.
    • The WWC also created an additional overview [4.53 MB ] that explains how to use the practice guide and what the guide includes.
    • REL West's archived webinar walks through the WWC practice guide and provides actionable mathematics instructional strategies for early childhood teachers.

School readiness

  • Check out REL Midwest's archived webinar on how schools can empower parents and support children entering kindergarten.
  • REL Southeast developed five infographics to share resources and explain how parents, schools, and communities can help prepare children to start school:

Kindergarten entry assessments

  • How can educators be more responsive to individual students' knowledge, skills, and needs? A video from REL Midwest has everything you need to know about using kindergarten entry assessments.
  • Attention Illinois educators! REL Midwest's virtual workshop will help you administer the Kindergarten Individual Development Survey and use the results to tailor instruction.
