REL Midwest

By: Cora Goldston

States and school districts in the Midwest are interested in learning more about charter schools, school choice, and school design as education options continue to expand. To support the needs and priorities of our states, Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Midwest has rounded up research reports and webinars about school choice from across the REL network.

Root cause analysis

  • REL Midwest's Ask A REL reference desk has three responses related to charter schools:
    • Charter school governance boards
    • Development of charter school leaders
    • Effects of school choice for disadvantaged students
  • REL Southeast analyzed school characteristics, student demographics, and achievement scores to identify charter schools that are "beating the odds."
  • What challenges do charter school leaders face? How much jurisdiction do they have over school policies? This REL Southeast report explores leadership characteristics and practices in South Carolina charter schools.
  • REL Southeast's archived webinar outlines research, state guidance, and federal guidance on charter school lotteries.
  • REL Southwest's report explores differences in special education enrollment and classification in Louisiana charter and traditional public schools. A related webinar provides a discussion of the report's key findings and implications. You can watch the webinar in segments:
    • Introduction and Overview
    • Researcher and Practitioner Reflection
    • Discussion and Closing
  • This REL Southwest report examines specific features of New Orleans charter schools associated with increased student achievement.
