In preparation for the 20th anniversary of the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), I joined with IES Center commissioners to to set a vision for the future of IES. We commissioned the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) to conduct a review of work core to our mission and to provide guidance on how best to hold ourselves to the values of transparency, accountability, and modernization.
Today, NASEM released the first of these reports, A Pragmatic Future for NAEP. While we are taking the necessary steps to digest and understand the thoughtful work the NASEM panel has put into this report, I'm encouraged by many of the panel's findings and recommendations. Collectively, the report highlights a path forward that will make NAEP a stronger measure of student learning and a more efficient use of taxpayer dollars.
I look forward to supporting our leadership team as they implement the recommendations in this report and continue their excellent work as the drivers behind the high standard we have set over the last 20 years.
We extend our deepest thanks to NASEM and the panelists for their thorough report and thoughtful recommendations.
