About this event

Bureau of Indian Education Tribal & School Leadership Summit

July 26, 2023

1:00-3:00 p.m. Mountain Time

Albuquerque Marriot Pyramid North

Culturally responsive education begins with teacher and leader preparation and continues with ongoing training and development. It is critical that educators are supported by culturally responsive evaluation systems in schools and organizations. This seminar discussed these issues by responding to the following questions: What are some of the most important components of culturally responsive teacher preparation programs? Where can teachers and teacher leaders find resource es and other supports that are relevant to their student's heritage and culture? What recommendations or guidance do you give to teachers and teachers leaders about how to incorporate those resources in authentic and meaningful ways? What are some best leadership practices of principals that support and sustain culturally responsive teaching in their schools?

This seminar highlighted a Santa Fe Indian School educator evaluation system that educators at the school, in collaboration with the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Southwest, specifically aligned to the context of the New Mexico tribes and pueblos the school serves. REL Southwest's Lacy Wood and Santa Fe Indian School's Dr. Anya Dozier Enos (Santa Clara Pueblo) discussed the motivation for and development of the evaluation system, including key considerations and a roadmap of the major steps of the project.

In addition, a panel of Dr. Tim Begaye (Dine), an education specialist at BIE; Dr. William Holmes (Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma), assistant professor of Educational Leadership at the University of New Mexico; Dr. Porter Swentzell (Santa Clara Pueblo), executive director of Kha'p'o Community School; and Dr. Dozier Enos discussed how to prepare preservice teachers for culturally responsive teaching, the importance of ongoing professional development for educators, and implementation of the Santa Fe Indian School's culturally responsive educator growth and evaluation system.
