Description: What are the most pressing education needs of American Indian students in North Dakota? How can the state best support schools in addressing those needs? To answer these questions, the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction partnered with the Regional Educational Laboratory Central to expand the North Dakota Native American Needs Assessment Survey. This work drew from the diverse perspectives of teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators. Their views provided important evidence to improve the survey, which in turn informs the Native American Needs Assessment Action Plan. This session will describe the processes for collaborative development between stakeholders, state staff, and researchers to build the cultural validity of the survey and provide the most relevant information to North Dakota educators. Both the survey and action plan serve as communication tools as educators prioritize ways to improve instruction for American Indian students.
