Description:
Dr. Brad Witzel, panel member of the Assisting Students Struggling with Mathematics: Response to Intervention (RtI) for Elementary and Middle Schools practice guide, will present the eight recommendations of the guide and discuss how to enact the recommendations. The second session will include remarks and discussion by Dr. Witzel and panel members who have experience implementing RtI in mathematics in elementary and/or middle grades schools and can speak about practical implications of the practice guide recommendations and answer participant questions and RtI implemenation in grades K-;8 in mathematics.

Audience: The audience will consist of administrative leadership that are responsible for making decisions related to RtI in mathematics for small rural elementary schools and middle schools. Targeted leadership positions include Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents/Curriculum Directors, Special Education Directors, and Elementary and Middle School Principals. A secondary target audience includes SEA personnel responsible for RtI implementation.

Speaker(s): Dr. Brad Witzel is associate professor, coordinator of the special education programs, and assistant department chair of Curriculum and Instruction at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and one of the authors of Assisting Students Struggling with Mathematics: Response to Intervention (RtI) for Elementary and Middle Schools, a Practice Guide from the Institute of Education Services.

Dr. Witzel has teaching experience at the K-;12 level and actively works with districts implementing RtI in mathematics and other content areas. His research focus is on mathematics and motivation strategies for students who learn at different rates and in different ways. Dr. Witzel is an experienced teacher and professor of education for students with exceptionalities or at-risk concerns. Dr. Witzel has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in special and general education methods as well as a variety of other courses. Dr. Witzel's publications include several research and practitioner articles, books, and book chapters on mathematics education and interventions, and has provided professional development to teachers and administrators in several states and school districts. He has a series of math interventions available through Pearson publishing and co-authored Response to Intervention in Math through Corwin Press. He served as a reviewer of the final report from the National Mathematics Advisory Panel, Foundations for Success. Dr. Witzel is a former president of the South Carolina Council for Exceptional Children.
