Teach Students How to Be Intentional When Choosing Solution Strategies

Description: The goals for the workshop are to: (a) expose teachers to rich problem solving tasks that highlight the need for students to recognize and generate strategies for solving problems (IES Algebra Practice Guide Recommendation 3); (b) help teachers learn how to teach students to evaluate and compare different strategies for solving problems (Algebra Recommendation 3); (c) model for teachers how to monitor and reflect on the problem-solving process to articulate the reasoning behind strategy choice and identify which strategy presented the most efficient means of obtaining the solution (Algebra Recommendation 3.2); (d) provide teachers with a listing of resources supported by the What Works Clearinghouse and the National Council for the Teachers of Mathematics; and (f) provide opportunities for participants to ask clarifying questions.

Research Alliance: Improving Instruction of Mathematics Research Alliance

Audience: The audience will include middle school and high school algebra teachers from St. Augustine School District, district-level curriculum supervisors, and school-level teacher leaders. In total, we are expecting approximately fifty to seventy-five participants. The audience will be recruited through the REL Southeast website, targeted e-mail blasts and support with support from the St. Augustine School district, and interested colleges & universities.
