Documentation to the 2016-17 Common Core of Data (CCD) Universe Files (NCES 2019-052)
About this event
On January 16, the National Center for Education Statistics will release the 2016-17 Common Core of Data Universe files. These files provide new data concerning public elementary and secondary education in the United States.
These data files provide new data for the universe of public elementary and secondary schools and agencies in the United States in school year 2016–17. Specifically, this report includes statistics that describe:
- the numbers and types of public elementary and secondary schools and local education agencies (LEAs);
- the operational status of schools and districts, including those that opened as new in school year or have closed since the prior school year;
- student membership counts;
- teacher counts.
These data show that there were 98,331 operating public elementary and secondary schools and 18,344 operating local education agencies in 2016-17. Those schools were attended by 50.5 million public elementary and secondary school students, which is an increase of less than 0.1 percent from the student membership in School Year 2015–16.
The data files and documentation are available on the CCD website: https://nces.ed.gov/ccd/
