Numbers and Types of Public Elementary and Secondary Schools From the Common Core of Data: School Year 2005-06 (NCES 2007-354)

There were more than 97,000 operating public schools in the United States in the 2005-06 school year. Almost 3,800 of these were charter schools – 433 of the charter schools newly opened in that school year. About 53,800 schools were reported as eligible for Title I. These data were reported by state education agencies through the Common Core of Data (CCD) survey system.
