About this event

On May 10, the National Center for Education Statistics will release Public High School Students' Use of Graduation, Career, or Education Plans.

This 2-page Data Point looks at the use of graduation, career or education plans in public schools as of 2012. About three-quarters of public high school students were required to have such plans. About 4-in-10 public high school students were required to create a personalized plan; 23 percent selected a plan from among those offered by their school; and 5 percent were assigned to a plan by their school. Only 11 percent of public high school students developed a plan that they submitted to their school and met with school staff at least annually to review or revise their plan.

The data used in this Data Point were drawn from a nationally representative, longitudinal survey of students who were in the ninth grade in 2009—the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009.
