Staff members from the Ohio Department of Education and researchers from Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Midwest will discuss the challenges and opportunities of using data from Ohio's Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plans to improve equity and access to reading supports and interventions. Ohio legislation includes policies that require districts use reading diagnostic data to connect students who are struggling to read to supports they need early. Ohio Department of Education staff will share lessons learned from efforts to use data to identify students who are not on track for reading proficiency; develop a quality reading improvement monitoring plan; and use those plans to ensure students receive the supports and interventions they need to become proficient readers. REL Midwest staff then will share insights from surveys and focus groups with Ohio district staff and teachers on their experiences with using reading diagnostic data and developing reading improvement monitoring plans.
Key insights show how the Ohio Department of Education and school districts can better support teachers to use reading diagnostic data. Implications for schools', teachers' and families' involvement in students' reading improvement will be discussed.
