About this event

This REL Southwest webinar described how the Santa Fe Indian School took culturally responsive education for Native American students to the next level.

Location: Webinar

Culturally responsive education begins with teacher and leader preparation and continues with ongoing training and development. However, many educators are not supported by culturally responsive evaluation systems. This webinar highlighted the Santa Fe Indian School educator evaluation system, which is specifically aligned to the context of the New Mexico tribes and pueblos that the school serves. Educators at the school partnered with REL Southwest to develop the evaluation system.

REL Southwest's Janice Keizer and Santa Fe Indian School's Dr. Anya Dozier Enos (Santa Clara Pueblo) discussed the motivation for and development of the evaluation system, including key considerations and a roadmap of the major steps of the project. The event also featured a panel with Dr. Glenabah Martinez (Taos Pueblo/Dine), Dr. Timothy Begaye (Dine), and Dr. Mark Ericson. The panelists discussed preparing preservice teachers for culturally responsive teaching, the importance of ongoing professional development for educators, and implementing the culturally responsive educator growth and evaluation system.

Speakers and panelists:

  • Janice Keizer, Senior Technical Assistance Consultant, REL Southwest
  • Anya Dozier Enos, PhD, Educational Development Director, Santa Fe Indian School
  • Glenabah Martinez, PhD, Associate Professor of Educational Thought and Sociocultural Studies and Director of the Institute for American Indian Education, University of New Mexico
  • Timothy Begaye, PhD, Education Program Specialist, Bureau of Indian Education
  • Mark Ericson, PhD, High School Community-Based Education Teacher, Santa Fe Indian School

Who will benefit: This webinar was designed for leaders and educators from schools serving high populations of Indigenous students and those interested in developing and/or incorporating culturally responsive educator evaluation systems.
