Description: Join REL West and the Leading with Learning program at WestEd for the second installment of our English Learner Webinar Series.

This 90-minute webinar will address how teachers can build language and vocabulary-rich classroom environments to support the language development of young students, with an emphasis on supporting dual language learners. Using the Teaching and Learning Cycle (TLC) framework--which weaves together content, language, and literacy for optimal learning--presenters will share practical strategies for explicit vocabulary instruction.

The TLC incorporates several best practices for teaching English learner students outlined by the What Works Clearinghouse Practice Guides and the National Academies' "Promising Futures" report.

Participants will:

• Learn about how to boost young children's academic language use, with a special focus on vocabulary and language-rich environments;
• See an example of interactive academic vocabulary instruction; and
• Discuss ways to incorporate daily academic language learning in fun and engaging ways.

Audience: The primary audiences for this event include teachers, LES staff (e.g., instructional coaches, principals, and staff developers), and teacher educators. Secondary audiences include university faculty and applied researchers who will benefit from learning about the application of theory to practice.
