About this event
Time: 3:30-4:30 p.m. ET
Location: Virtual Session, 2022 NCES STATS-DC Data Conference
Description: The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) partnered with the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Midwest on a study to identify incentives for nonteaching Michigan teachers to return to the classroom. During this virtual session at the NCES STATS-DC Data Conference, the research team will discuss how the study originated and challenges with obtaining and combining K-12 student data, teacher staffing data, and teacher certificate data to identify nonteaching teachers. The team also will discuss how these state data were combined with nonteaching teachers' responses to a survey on reasons why they are not teaching and the appeal of various incentives to return to teaching. Presenters will describe the characteristics of nonteaching Michigan teachers and the types of incentives that might bring them back to the profession. Leah Breen, director of MDE's Office of Educator Excellence, will discuss the context surrounding this study and how MDE used the results to inform policy changes and its Proud Michigan Educator campaign.
