WASHINGTON (September 13, 2023) — The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the statistical center within the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences (IES), released today the 25th edition of Report on Indicators of School Crime and Safety: 2022. The Indicators of School Crime and Safety is a joint effort of the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) and NCES. This report compiles and presents the most recent national data on:
- Criminal Incidents at Postsecondary Institutions
- Hate Crime Incidents at Postsecondary Institutions
- Incidence of Victimization at School and Away From School
- Teachers Threatened With Injury or Physically Attacked by Students
- Teachers’ Reports of Disruptive Student Behaviors and Staff Rule Enforcement

“The goal of the Report on Indicators of School Crime and Safety is to inform policymakers, families, educators, and the public at large about sobering challenges like student victimization and teacher safety,” said NCES Commissioner Peggy G. Carr. “These matters concern everyone in the education community, spanning from families with young children to students in college. And by partnering with the Bureau of Justice of Statistics, we can draw from an extensive amount of data sources to disseminate the information in a useful, timely, and accurate manner.”
The report, part of NCES’s Condition of Education system, leverages data from various sources, including national surveys of students, teachers, and educational institutions as well as administrative data sources.
