Setting

The study was conducted in 3rd and 4th grade classes in two urban elementary schools in Texas.

Study sample

All students were Mexican-American. Forty-seven percent were female. Forty-seven percent were in third grade and 53 percent were in fourth grade.

Intervention Group

Students watched two 23-minute pro-social videos each week for six weeks. The videos were from an animated children’s television program whose main characters are the twins, Maya and Miguel. The central theme is about doing the proper thing for family and community. The show fosters a positive view of Latino family, language, and cultures with an emphasis on the value of family and friends. (p. 80)

Comparison Group

Students watched two 23-minute neutral (i.e., nature-themed) videos each week for six weeks.
