Study Details
Setting
All Texas schools that used at least 14 of 18 units from the STEMscopes Science curriculum in grade 5 in 2018-19, as well as matched comparison schools identified by propensity score matching procedures, participated in the study. STEMscopes Science was used by 2,379 schools across 427 districts in 2018-19.
Study sample
Of the 1,692 schools with complete data for grade 5 students, the authors reported that slightly less than half (49%) of the students were female, about two-thirds (67%) received free or reduced-price meals, 59% were Latino, and 24% were White.
Intervention Group
All Texas schools that used the STEMscopes Science curriculum (i.e., using at least 80% of STEMscope topics) in grade 5 in 2018-19 were considered treatment schools; no other details about treatment were provided.
Comparison Group
The comparison group included propensity score matched Texas schools that did not use the STEMscopes Science curriculum in grade 5 in 2018-19, and thus conducted business as usual.
