Description: The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and the North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principals Association (NCPAPA) are interested in improving the quality and raising the number of principals in North Carolina's educator workforce, particularly principals leading rural schools. To support these efforts, the two groups have partnered with the Regional Educational Laboratory Southeast (REL-Southeast) to conduct a study of North Carolina's assistant principals and principals. Specifically, the researchers will examine the demographics, educational attainment, certifications, and career paths of North Carolina's school leaders from 2001/02 through 2012/13. This information will be shared with members of the REL-Southeast's School Leadership in North Carolina Research Alliance (which includes members from DPI and NCPAPA) to support their efforts to enhance the principal pool and quality of school leaders. The information will also be shared with other educators, administrators, policy makers, and researchers across the region and nation interested in examining the principal workforce in their states.
