Self-study guide for implementing career counseling in secondary schools


Description: The goal of this project is to create and provide State Education Agencies and Local Education Agencies with a self-study guide template for a team of educators to assess their implementation of career counseling practices across a district or school and discuss potential improvements. The template will be arranged by areas found to be important to career counseling efforts through a review of the literature and discussions with stakeholders. Each area will include a rating scale for self-assessment of implementation, potential sources for evidence, and guiding questions for discussion that may help states, districts, and secondary schools improve the effectiveness and delivery of career counseling. Teams of career and technical education (CTE) teachers, administrators, and school counselors serving these populations may use the guide to self-assess implementation of career counseling services and make changes as needed to help increase the percentages of students graduating from high school, entering post-secondary institutions, or embarking on a clear career path immediately after high school.
