Practitioner brief: Understanding the link between fidelity of implementation and professional development outcomes

Abstract:

Description: This project aims to address the need for practitioner-friendly resources to support district leaders in evaluating professional development activities in their districts. The brief will introduce district leaders and others involved in PD management to key concepts related to PD evaluation, with a special focus on implementation fidelity and the role it plays in evaluating teacher and student outcomes. The brief will begin with an overview of how to conceptualize PD evaluation, including recommendations for determining the purpose of evaluation and creating a logic model. Next, it will describe the importance of assessing the implementation fidelity of PD programs, as well as key aspects of measuring fidelity. The final section will discuss the relationship between fidelity and program implementation and will conclude with key considerations for understanding the link between PD and teacher and student outcomes. This brief will include templates practitioners can use in their own contexts.
