Analyzing Teacher Mobility and Retention: Guidance and Considerations

Region:
Northeast & Islands
Abstract:

Description: This set of two applied research methods reports is a guide for stakeholders interested in analyzing teacher mobility and retention. Report 1 explains the process of calculating mobility and retention rates. It describes each analytic step and key considerations, and provides examples from relevant literature. Report 2 illustrates how the mobility and retention rates might be used in three typical analyses: analyzing a trend in mobility and retention; comparing mobility or retention across districts or across states; and examining relationships where the outcome is retention or mobility.

Research Questions: The reports will help state education agencies answer the following questions:

  1. How can states calculate teacher mobility and retention rates that align with their context and aims?
  2. How can states examine the ways in which teacher, school, and district characteristics relate to teacher mobility and retention?
