About Our Region

Geographically defined by four of the Great Lakes and the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, REL Midwest's seven–state region is home to more than 55.4 million people—approximately 17 percent of the nation's population. More than 530,000 teachers serve approximately 8.6 million students in nearly 20,000 public schools.

Illinois state image

Illinois has more than 2 million students across 1,066 districts, with 4,201 public schools. Nearly one out of five public schools in the state are located in a rural setting. Fourteen percent of students have individualized education plans, 54% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, and 10% of students are English learners. White students account for 49% of the student population, followed by 25% Hispanic, 17% Black, 5% Asian or Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% two or more races, and 0% American Indian/Alaska Native students. Indiana state image

Indiana's 1,910 public schools serve more than a million students across 411 school districts. Of those schools, 35% are located in a rural setting. Approximately half of the state's students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Additionally, 16% of students have individualized education plans and 6% of students are English learners. White students make up 70% of the student population followed by 12% Black, 11% Hispanic, 5% two or more races, 2% Asian or Asian/Pacific Islander, and 0% American Indian/Alaska Native students. Iowa state image

Iowa schools serve more than 500,000 students across 1,364 public schools in 347 school districts. Half of the public schools are in a rural setting. Forty percent of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, 13% of students have individualized education plans, and 5% are English learners. White students make up 78% of the student population, followed by 10% Hispanic, 5% Black, 3% two or more races, 3% Asian or Asian/Pacific Islander, and 0% American Indian/Alaska Native students. Michigan state image

Michigan has 912 districts with 3,497 public schools. Approximately one out of four public schools are located in a rural setting. Of the state's 1,537,922 students, about 46% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, 13% of students have individualized education plans, and 5% of students are English learners. The student population is comprised of 68% White, 18% Black, 7% Hispanic, 3% Asian or Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% two or more races, and 1% American Indian/Alaska Native students. Minnesota state image

Minnesota has 857,235 students in 2,435 public schools across 544 districts. Rural schools account for 29% of public schools in the state. Thirty–eight percent of students in the state qualify for free or reduced price lunch, 15% of students have individualized education plans, and 8% are English learners. White students make up 70% of the student population followed by 10% Black, 9% Hispanic, 7% Asian or Asian/Pacific Islander, 4% two or more races, and 2% American Indian/Alaska Native students. Ohio's 3,631 public schools serve 1,724,810 students in 1,106 districts, with approximately one out of four public schools located in a rural setting. Forty–five percent of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, 15% of students have individualized education plans, and 3% are English learners. Ohio's student population consists of 72% White, 16% Black, 5% Hispanic, 5% two or more races, 2% Asian or Asian/Pacific Islander, and 0% American Indian/Alaska Native students. Wisconsin has 466 districts with 2,255 public schools. Approximately 1 in 3 public schools are located in a rural setting. Of the state's 871,432 students, 41% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, 14% of students have individualized education plans, and 5% are English learners. Wisconsin's student population is made up of 72% White, 11% Hispanic, 10% Black, 4% Asian or Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% two or more races, and 1% American Indian/Alaska Native students.
