Julie Kochanek Staff Picture

Julie Kochanek, Ph.D., is a managing director at American Institutes for Research (AIR) and director of REL Midwest. Dr. Kochanek has nearly 20 years of experience in research and evaluation of school reform efforts, with a special focus on the social and organizational conditions surrounding schools and districts. In her current role as director of REL Midwest and her previous role as the director of research for REL Northeast & Islands, she has designed and implemented structures and procedures that engage stakeholders in the research process, facilitate collaboration between researchers and practitioners throughout a project life cycle, and support stakeholders in the use of findings. She has published multiple studies for IES and is author of Building Trust for Better Schools: Research-Based Practices and coauthor of multiple chapters in Trust in Schools: A Core Resource for Improvement (by Anthony S. Bryk and Barbara Schneider). Dr. Kochanek earned her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago.

Chad Duhon Staff Picture

Chad Duhon is a principal researcher at AIR and deputy director of REL Midwest. In the 2012–2017 REL Midwest contract, Duhon served as the Analytical Technical Support Task Lead and managed more than 20 projects that helped practitioners, schools, districts, and states in the Midwest region understand how to use data to inform decisions to improve student learning. Previously, Duhon served as project manager for the College and Career Readiness and Success Center at AIR. In this role, he contributed to the development of center products and technical assistance activities and managed operational work of the center, including staffing, budget projections, and resource allocation. Duhon earned his Master’s in education policy studies from The George Washington University.
