REL Pacific's Governing Board Meeting: A Glimpse Into our Partnerships' Work

On April 3 and 4, REL Pacific's Governing Board and staff came together in Honolulu, Hawai'i for the REL Pacific Governing Board Meeting to share, learn from each other, and collaborate.

During the meeting, participants discussed their varying current initiatives, high-priority topic focuses, projects, roles, and possibilities for future work across the region. Here are some of the updates that we heard on the happenings in our region!

American Samoa flag

In American Samoa, our partnership members are working to build a dual enrollment program between the college and the American Samoa Department of Education. Stakeholders are also working on implementing more career and technical education opportunities and creating connections between technical education programs and prospective employers.

Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands flag

Our partnership members in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are working with REL Pacific on college and career readiness and professional learning projects in the wake of Typhoon Yutu, fostering this growing collaborative relationship through virtual and in-person trainings, coaching sessions, and meetings.

Chuuk flag

Our partnership members in Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) are committed to working on the high-leverage priority areas of college and career readiness and professional learning. Currently, a transition course is being designed, and partnership members are examining the alignment of their K–12 education system with college and career readiness requirements.

Guam flag

Our partnership members in Guam are working closely with REL Pacific to carry studies on using high school data to predict college success and using high school and college data to predict teacher candidates' performance on the Praxis Core exam at the University of Guam. In addition, stakeholders in Guam are interested in providing support to mid-career teachers in recruitment and certification.

Hawaii flag

In Hawai'i, stakeholders are working to support the Department of Education and the A'o Aloha Collaborative for Social and Emotional Learning and to evaluate an upcoming kindergarten transition summer program.

Pohnpei flag

In Pohnpei in the FSM, our partnership members are working closely with REL Pacific on research projects that will analyze data from students within the Pohnpei Department of Education and the College of Micronesia to identify characteristics of successful students. In addition, stakeholders in Pohnpei are also working towards providing teachers with additional professional learning opportunities.

Republic of the Marshall Islands flag

In the Republic of the Marshall Islands, partnership members have expressed interest in conducting research into the Marshallese learning style and the effects of approaching instruction through culturally responsive methods and project-based learning.

Republic of Palau flag

Our partnership members in the Republic of Palau are working collaboratively with REL Pacific to plan projects related to college and career readiness that are better aligned with the needs of stakeholders within Palau. In addition, members are working to provide support for in-service teacher development.

Yap flag

In Yap in the FSM, our partnership members are interested in continuing their work in professional learning and focusing on developing a teacher pipeline and onboarding and training processes to ensure that teachers are informed about expectations of their work and have a sense of institutional affiliation that can provide additional support.
