Advancing Equity and English Learner Policy in New Mexico

October 19, 2022 | 1:00–3:30 p.m. Mountain Time

Santa Fe, New Mexico

New Mexico has prioritized high-quality and culturally appropriate instruction for English learner students in the state. In line with this priority, REL Southwest collaborated with the New Mexico Public Education Department and other partners to provide high-quality evidence to improve practice and support statewide policies and resources that target English learner students.

This in-person event will highlight the work and resources of this collaboration, known as the Southwest English Learners (SWEL) research partnership. Angelica Herrera, PhD, and Elizabeth Jameyson will facilitate a discussion of resources related to effective instructional practices for English learner students, including a user guide supporting both the state’s Enhanced Serving English Learners Monitoring Checklist and Promising Practices to Support English Learner Students. Brenda Arellano, PhD, will lead participants in a discussion of REL Southwest’s findings regarding reclassification standards for English learner students and the policy implications of districts’ biliteracy seal programs.

Traci Karageorge will then lead participants in a discussion of findings from REL Southwest’s training series on effective strategies for supporting American Indian English learner students as well as findings from the report English Language Development Among American Indian English Learner Students in New Mexico.
