Viewing and Discussion Guide

Resource List

Video Transcript

Ninth grade is an especially important year in a student's school experience. Research shows that students who don't manage this transition to high school well often fall behind in course credits and fall off track to graduate on time and are more likely to drop out. This 19-minute video provides an overview of the challenges facing students entering their first year of high school. It shares researcher, practitioner, and student insights and experiences about three promising practices to help students manage the transition and stay on track to graduate:

  • Using data to identify students at risk of dropping out,
  • Providing academic supports to students who need help, and
  • Connecting students to caring adults.

A guide for veiwing and discussing the video and a list of additional resources are also provided.
