As a member of the Regional Educational Laboratory West (REL West) research team, Senior Research Associate Kenwyn Derby leads a partnership with the United Way of Salt Lake (Utah) in support of a regional collective impact initiative to improve outcomes for children and families, with a focus on preparing students to be ready for kindergarten, reach key academic milestones, and graduate on time from high school ready for postsecondary life.

Since joining REL West in 2006, Derby has worked on efforts assessing regional needs; responding to requests for evidence-based information; collaborating with other RELs in a national network; planning and executing dissemination activities; and providing technical assistance at a school-, district-, and state-level in the Dropout Prevention Alliance.

Prior to this, Derby was part of WestEd’s Department of the Chief Program Officer, where she planned strategic meetings of agency directors; spearheaded projects to improve internal communication and collaboration; and led a task force in which staff developed systems to improve project management and program efficiency.

Derby has twice received an Annual Award for Exceptional Contribution to the WestEd Community, for her work strengthening team functioning and productivity and supporting the reputation of the agency and as part of the SchoolsMovingUp leadership team.

Prior to joining WestEd, Derby managed recruiting, performance management, and organizational development for an internet start-up; served as a municipal human resource analyst developing personnel assessments and interview protocol; and held positions in editing and psychology research.

Derby received a BA in political science and Spanish from Amherst College and an MS in organizational psychology from San Francisco State University.
