Senior Policy Associate

As a Senior Policy Associate with WestEd's Regional Educational Laboratory West (REL West), Tony Fong manages the College Preparation Partnership and leads various analytic studies. For the College Preparation Partnership, REL West is partnering with developers of the Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC), which is a grade 12 English course designed to better prepare students for the rigors of college-level English coursework. This partnership seeks to improve students’ preparedness for college and reduce college remediation rates in California.

Previous REL West publications that Fong has led include:

  • An examination of the frequency with which students repeat Algebra I
  • A study projecting the number of teacher retirements in California over a ten-year period
  • An examination of the mobility patterns of students across schools in Arizona

Fong has presented his research at numerous annual conferences, including the Society for Research on Educational Effectiveness, the Association for Education Finance and Policy, and the American Educational Research Association.

Prior to joining WestEd, Fong served as a Senior Associate in the Assurance and Business Advisory Services group at PricewaterhouseCoopers. There he also served as the Director for the San Francisco office's Junior Achievement program.

Fong received a BA in business/economics from the University of California, Los Angeles, and an MS in applied statistics and a PhD in economics and education from Columbia University, Teachers College.
