Director

John Rice is the Director of the Regional Educational Laboratory West (REL West). Previously he served as Deputy Director of REL West and led the Nevada Education Research Alliance at REL West, where he directed collaborative research projects in partnership with Clark County School District and Washoe County School District that focused on the districts’ efforts to increase career and college readiness of their graduates. He has also managed a number of large evaluation contracts, including a multi-year evaluation of Michigan’s School Improvement Grants (SIGs) using a quasi-experimental design, and an evaluation of California’s Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grant using student growth modeling. He provides coordination and quality assurance for WestEd’s evaluations of Teacher Quality Partnerships across three California State University campuses. Prior to joining WestEd, Rice managed evaluations of federal programs at IES. These evaluations included randomized control trials of school-based mentoring and violence prevention.

Rice received a PhD in developmental psychology from the University of California, Irvine.
