Description: Research has shown that exclusionary discipline actions such as out-of-school suspensions are linked to negative outcomes for students; in addition, these types of disciplinary actions are sometimes disproportionately administered to subgroups of students, such as racial/ethnic minority students or students with disabilities.

Based on the recently published IES Applied Research Methods report, “Analyzing student-level disciplinary data: A guide for districts,” this webinar is intended to assist districts in investigating their disciplinary data and examining to what extent exclusionary actions are being administered and whether they are being administered disproportionately. Report co-authors Dr. Anthony Petrosino and Trevor Fronius will present the researchers’ perspective; a representative from the Vermont Agency of Education will offer the perspective of a state-level leader and discuss implications for districts and schools.

Audience: This webinar is open to the public. Researchers, district-level leaders responsible for data and/or accountability, school-based practitioners, technical assistance providers, and state-level policymakers may be particularly interested, especially if they have a focus on disciplinary data collection and/or analyses. The webinar may also be of interest to state education agency staff who influence school discipline and school climate policies.
