Summer Research Training Institute: Design and Analysis of Practical Quasi-Experiments for use in Education: August August 8–12, 2011 and August 15–19, 2011

Objective:	The National Center for Education Research (NCER) in the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education announces its first Summer Research Training Institute on Better Quasi-Experimental Design and Analysis in order to increase the national capacity of researchers to develop and conduct rigorous evaluations of the impact of education interventions. The Institute will hold a one-week long training session twice this year.

Location:	Northwestern University; Evanston, IL The Training Institute will be held at the Norris Center on the campus of Northwestern University. Northwestern University is located on the shore of Lake Michigan in the town of Evanston, just north of Chicago. Institute participants will be housed at the Hilton Garden Inn. The hotel is located within walking distance of Northwestern University.

Course Content:	The course sessions will provide intensive training on planning, implementing and analyzing data from quasi-experimental designs. The course will enable participants to: Understand different conceptions of causation including the conception underlying experimental methods and how methods to improve experiments can also be applied to improve quasi-experiments. Understand several different quasi-experimental designs including regression discontinuity, interrupted time series, and various kinds of matching designs. Have access to the most recent research on these methods and their successful implementation in school-based research. For more information about the course content, please view the sample syllabus.
Training Institute Sponsor:	Northwestern University's Institute for Policy Research, with a grant from the Institute of Education Sciences, is providing support for this Summer Training Institute.
Eligibility Requirements and Selection Criteria for Training Institute Fellows:	Applicants should have a doctoral degree (Ph.D., Ed.D.) and experience conducting research relevant to education, though a few senior graduate students will also be admitted. Applicants for travel and lodging scholarships must be citizens or non-citizen nationals of the United States, or must have been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence (i.e., possess a currently valid Alien Registration Receipt Card I-551, or other legal verification of such status). Preference will be given to individuals who (a) have demonstrated their ability to conduct independent research, (b) are currently employed in a setting in which conducting research relevant to education is part of their regular responsibilities, and (c) can demonstrate that they have a need for the knowledge and skills addressed in the Training Institute. Each application will be evaluated on its own merits. If more than 120 meritorious applications are received, other criteria such as disciplinary, geographical, and institutional diversity will be taken into account. Costs and Stipends:	Northwestern University will pay the cost for attendees' tuition during the week. Attendees will be responsible for their travel and lodging costs. A discounted rate has been negotiated at a local hotel. In a few cases, it will be possible to cover all travel and lodging costs for those attendees who demonstrate a special need.

Applicants can indicate their preference for which session they would like to attend; however, only one session will be awarded per applicant.
