Research Design Workshop for Faculty from Minority-Serving Institutions: Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What are the eligibility criteria for applicants to the Research Design Workshop?
    Answer: We are only considering applicants who already have a PhD or EdD degree, who are currently faculty (or research staff) in minority-serving institutions and are U.S. citizens or non-citizens with permanent residence status.

  2. I am a visiting faculty member conducting research at an American university on a visa. Am I eligible?
    Answer: No. Due to space limitations and our citizenship requirement, the course is open only to U.S. citizens or non-citizen nationals who have been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence (i.e., possess a currently valid Alien Registration Receipt Card I-551, or other legal verification of such status).

  3. Does my college/university qualify as a minority-serving institution (MSI)?
    Answer: Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) include:
    • Alaska Native-Serving Institutions
    • American Indian Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities
    • Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs)
    • High Hispanic Enrollment and Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs)
    • Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)
    • Minority Institutions
    • Native American-Serving, Nontribal Institutions
    • Native Hawaiian-Serving Institutions
    • Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs)

  4. How many people will be accepted for the course?
    Answer: Up to 15 applicants will be accepted.

  5. Can more than one person from an organization apply?
    Answer: Yes. We will evaluate each application on its own merits.

  6. If I am accepted, can I bring my spouse and/or children?
    Answer: Yes, but at your own expense.

  7. What is the Research Design Workshop schedule?

  8. Can you send me the course materials if I am unable to attend?
    Answer: PowerPoint presentations will be available on this website and on the IES/NCER website as soon as possible after the 2.5 day Research Design Workshop ends.

  9. Do I have to attend all the sessions during the Research Design Workshop?
    Answer: Yes, we require participants to attend and participate in all of the course sessions and activities during the 2.5 day training period.
