BPS:12 PETS is the third data release for a study of a nationally representative sample of first-time beginning postsecondary students who were surveyed 3 times over 6 academic years, in 2011-12, 2014, and 2017. Postsecondary academic transcripts were requested from all institutions attended by sample members. These transcript data include detailed information, by institution attended and by time periods, on enrollment, degree programs, fields of study, course taking, credit accumulation, and academic performance. |

2017 Mathematics Process Data: grade 8 As schools in the United States are increasingly using digital technology in the classroom to teach and assess students, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has moved forward to align with these practices. NAEP’s transition from paper-based to digitally based administration provides an engaging assessment experience for students and aligns with the delivery mode of many other large-scale assessments. Importantly, this transition to digitally based assessment (DBA) also allows NAEP to use tools available in digital platforms to measure content in new ways; to use assistive technology to provide enhanced accommodations for students with special needs; and to collect new types of data that deepen our understanding of what students know and can do, including how they engage with new technologies to approach problem solving. In 2017, the NAEP mathematics assessment was administered for the first time as a DBA at grades 4 and 8. The digital platform allowed for the collection of new data within the testing system, including information on how students used onscreen tools to develop their responses to the assessment questions. These new data are called response process data. To further enrich our understanding of what students know and can do in the digital environment, response process data from the 2017 NAEP grade 8 mathematics assessment are now available for secondary analysis. NAEP DBAs offer far more flexibility in meeting the needs of different students. The DBAs include Universal Design Elements, or built-in features that make it possible for more students to participate without special accommodation sessions. Onscreen tools are also available for students to use in their problem solving. The goal is for all students to have a seamless assessment administration, regardless of their ability. |

This data file documentation accompanies new data files for the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) Postsecondary Education Transcript Study and Student Financial Aid Records Collection (PETS-SR). HSLS:09 follows a nationally representative sample of students who were ninth-graders in fall 2009 from high school into postsecondary education and the workforce. The PETS-SR data collection was conducted between spring 2017 and fall 2018, approximately 4 years after high school graduation for most of the cohort. These data allow researchers to examine postsecondary coursetaking experiences and financial aid awards for the subset of fall 2009 ninth-graders who enrolled in postsecondary education after high school. |

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Education Demographic and Geographic Estimates (EDGE) program developed school neighborhood poverty estimates to provide an indicator of the economic conditions in neighborhoods where schools are located. These spatially interpolated demographic and economic (SIDE) estimates apply spatial statistical methods to existing sources of income and poverty data developed by the U.S. Census Bureau to produce new indicators with additional flexibility to support educational research. The economic conditions of neighborhoods around schools may or may not reflect the neighborhood conditions of students who attend the schools. However, supplemental information about school neighborhoods may be useful to combine with student-level or school-level information to provide a clearer picture of the overall educational environment. |

These students were first interviewed as part of the 2011 – 12 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:12). In particular, this report details the methodology and outcomes of the BPS:12/17 sample design, student interview design, student interview data collection processes, administrative records matching, data file processing, and weighting procedures. The BPS study is unique in that it includes both traditional and nontraditional students, follows their paths through postsecondary education over the course of 6 years, and is not limited to enrollment at a single institution. |

This Data File User's Manual contains documentation about the purpose and contents of restricted-use data files that include additional geographic information for the three 2016 National Household Education Surveys Program (NHES:2016) surveys: the Early Childhood Program Participation (ECPP) Survey, the Parent and Family Involvement in Education (PFI) Survey, and the Adult Training and Education Survey (ATES). Variables are drawn from administrative and survey data from NCES and other federal agencies (primarily data from the Census Bureau) to expand the analytic utility of NHES:2016 data. The supplementary data include geographic identifiers down to the census block group and identifiers for a child’s assigned public school district. The files also include measures based on radii around a respondent’s home for access to different education programs and schools. While additional geographic characteristic information is provided, the data support estimates of national-level characteristics and not subnational geographies like states or specific localities. The additional geocode data can be used to produce nationally representative estimates or national-level subgroup analyses such as schooling experiences of students living in low-population density areas with high employment rates across the U.S. but not schooling experiences of students in a specific rural area. |

The Comparable Wage Index (CWI) is an index that was initially created by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) to facilitate comparison of educational expenditures across locales (principally school districts, or local educational agencies—LEAs) or states (state educational agencies— SEAs). The CWI is a measure of the systematic, regional variations in the wages and salaries of college graduates who are not PK-12 educators as determined by reported occupational category. It can be used by researchers to adjust district-level finance data at different levels in order to make better comparisons across geographic areas. This documentation describes the creation of a CWI for teachers based primarily on the American Community Survey (ACS). The ACS, an ongoing survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, has replaced the decennial census as the primary source of detailed demographic information about the U.S. population. It provides information about the earnings, age, occupation, industry, and other demographic characteristics for millions of U.S. workers. The ACS-CWIFT measures wage and salary differences for college graduates, using an analysis that is modeled after the baseline analysis used to construct the original CWI released by NCES in 2006. |

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Education Demographic and Geographic Estimates (EDGE) program develops the NCES locale classification, a general geographic indicator that categorizes U.S. territory into four types of areas: City, Suburban, Town, and Rural. Each type of area contains three subtypes. NCES uses the locale indicators to support research, analysis, and sample design. It provides a locale code for each institution in its administrative data collections—Common Core of Data (CCD), Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), and the Private School Survey (PSS)—and includes locale assignments as indicators in most NCES school-based sample surveys. Although NCES includes a locale assignment as a data item in most of its activities, the geographic boundaries used to create the assignments were first developed and published as a data product in 2015. The purpose of the NCES locale file is to provide annually updated locale boundaries in a spatial data format that can be used to support supplemental research and analysis. The NCES locale file allows data users to create locale indicators for additional institutions or locations, and enables a closer examination of physical features and social conditions that may affect education in each type of locale. The NCES locale boundary files do not include information about school locations, and therefore the files do not provide a direct source for school locale assignments. NCES includes locale assignments and estimated latitude and longitude values of school locations as part of its institutional data collections, but discussion of school address geocodes falls outside the scope of the locale boundary files. |
