NCES 2019019 User's Manual for the ECLS-K:2011 Fifth-Grade Hearing Evaluations Component Restricted-Use Data File
This User’s Manual provides information on the hearing evaluations conducted on a subsample of study children in the spring fifth-grade round of data collection for the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010-11 (ECLS-K:2011). It describes the evaluation components and data collection procedures used to evaluate children's hearing. It also describes the fifth-grade hearing evaluations component restricted-use data file structure and variables created from data collected during the evaluations. This manual is only available to users of the ECLS-K:2011 Fifth-Grade Hearing Evaluations Component Restricted-Use Data File (NCES 2019-018).

NCES 2019018 ECLS-K:2011 Fifth-Grade Hearing Evaluations Component Restricted-Use Data File
Hearing evaluations were conducted on a subsample of study children in the spring fifth-grade round of data collection. The ECLS-K:2011 fifth-grade hearing evaluations component restricted-use data file includes all of the hearing evaluation data collected during the spring 2016 round, including: responses from children to a set of pre-test questions intended to identify conditions that might affect either how the evaluation should be conducted or how the results should be interpreted; results from otoscopy, a brief visual examination of the ear; results from tympanometry, an automated test of middle ear function; results from pure tone air conduction audiometry; and results of a screener for specific language impairment. The hearing evaluations data are provided in an ASCII text file (Y5_hearingevaluation.DAT). A program that must be run in a statistical software package to input the ASCII text file and produce an analytic data file is provided in three formats: SAS, SPSS, and Stata. This file is intended to be used in conjunction with a main longitudinal restricted-use ECLS-K:2011 data file, for example the ECLS-K:2011 kindergarten-fifth grade restricted-use data file (NCES 2019-100).

The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010-11 (ECLS-K:2011) is a longitudinal study that followed a nationally representative sample of students from their kindergarten year to the spring of 2016, when most of the students were in fifth grade. This public-use data file includes data from every round of data collection: the fall and spring of the 2010-11 school year, when all of the students were in kindergarten; the fall and spring of the 2011-12 school year, when most of the students were in first grade; the fall and spring of the 2012-13 school year, when most of the students were in second grade; the spring of 2014, when most of the students were in third grade; the spring of 2015, when most of the students were in fourth grade, and the spring of 2016, when most of the students were in fifth grade. The file includes information collected from the students, their parents/guardians, their teachers, and their school administrators in each year of the study. It also includes information collected in the spring of 2011 from their kindergarten-year before- and after-school care providers.

NCES 2019241 Baccalaureate and Beyond (B&B:16/17): A First Look at the Employment and Educational Experiences of College Graduates, 1 Year Later
This report describes outcomes of 2015–16 bachelor’s degree recipients 1 year after graduation. Outcomes include time to degree, amount borrowed for undergraduate education, postbaccalaureate enrollment, employment status, earnings and job characteristics, and steps taken toward a career in teaching. These findings are based on data from the first follow-up of the Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study (B&B:16/17), a nationally representative longitudinal sample survey of students who completed the requirements for a bachelor's degree during the 2015–16 academic year.

This brief report provides a first look at the overall fifth-grade achievement of the students who attended kindergarten for the first time in the 2010-11 school year and were in fifth grade in the spring of 2016 using data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010-11 (ECLS-K:2011). Reading, mathematics, and science assessment scores in the spring of fifth grade are shown, both overall and by selected child and family characteristics.

NCES 2019119 Factors That Influence Student College Choice
This report is based on data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09), a nationally representative, longitudinal study of more than 23,000 ninth-graders in 2009. The cohort was surveyed again in spring 2012 when most students were in eleventh grade. This survey included questions about characteristics that would influence choosing a school or college after high school.

The report provides estimates regarding the timing of military service; the demographic and academic characteristics of those who served in the military; the relationship between students’ expectations for a military career and subsequent military service; the relationship between students’ military service and that of their parents; and the postsecondary enrollment, fields of study, degree attainment, and financial aid of students with and without military service. The report draws on data from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002).

NCES 2018086 English Language Program Participation Among Students in the Kindergarten Class of 2010–11: Spring 2011 to Spring 2012
This Statistics in Brief examines differences in the student and school characteristics of kindergartners who participated in instructional programs designed to teach English language skills and students who did not participate in such programs in the kindergarten class of 2010–11. The brief then examines the characteristics of the English language program (e.g., English as a second language, bilingual education, and dual-language education) that participating students were receiving in spring 2011 and changes in participation in these programs between spring 2011 and spring 2012. Data come from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010–11 (ECLS-K:2011), a longitudinal study that was designed to follow the same children from kindergarten through fifth grade.

This data file includes public-use data from the base year through second follow-up of the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09).

This release includes the most recent data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09), collected as part of the Second Follow-up. HSLS:09 follows a nationally representative sample of students who were ninth-graders in fall 2009 from the beginning of high school into higher education and the workforce. The second follow-up was conducted from March 2016 through January 2017, approximately 3 years after high school graduation for most of the cohort. The data collected allow researchers to examine an array of young-adulthood outcomes among fall 2009 ninth-graders, including delayed high school completion, postsecondary enrollment, early postsecondary persistence and attainment, labor market experiences, family formation, and family financial support.

This Statistics in Brief describes students’ summer nonparental care arrangements, program attendance (e.g., at summer camps or summer school), participation in activities with family members in a typical week, and places visited with family members. Participation in summer activities is compared by two socioeconomic characteristics—household poverty status and parents’ highest level of education—utilizing data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010–11 (ECLS-K:2011).

NCEE 20184011 Preparing for Life after High School: The Characteristics and Experiences of Youth in Special Education. A Summary of Key Findings from the National Longitudinal Transition Study 2012
The National Longitudinal Transition Study 2012 (NLTS 2012) is the third study conducted over several decades to examine the characteristics, experiences, and post-high school outcomes of a nationally representative sample of youth with disabilities and is part of the congressionally-mandated National Assessment of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act 2004 (IDEA 2004). The evaluation brief summarizes key findings from previously released report volumes describing youth with an individualized education program (IEP) and their activities in school in relation to other students without an IEP (Volume 1), across the federally defined disability groups (Volume 2), and over time (Volume 3).

The brief indicates that, although their engagement and use of school supports have increased over the past decade (2003-2012), high school youth with an IEP are more socioeconomically disadvantaged and less likely to have experiences and expectations associated with success after high school than were other students in 2012. Among the disability groups in 2012, youth with intellectual disability, autism, deaf-blindness, multiple disabilities, and orthopedic impairments were found to be most at-risk for not transitioning successfully beyond high school.

NCES 2017136 IPEDS Presents: NCES Postsecondary Surveys

IPEDS brochures inform data users (e.g., researchers, policy makers, members of the media, the general public, etc.) about the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System.

Title IV institutions participate in any of the Title IV federal student financial aid programs administered by the office of Federal Student Aid (FSA). Through several postsecondary data collections, NCES gathers information about where and how the aid is distributed and whether it had an impact on student outcomes.

This brochure describes the NCES postsecondary surveys, including: the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS), Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS), and Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study (B&B).
