This First Look publication provides the first results of the 2017–18 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, Administrative Collection (NPSAS:18-AC), the most comprehensive national study of student financing of postsecondary education in the United States. The study includes information for about 245,000 undergraduate students and 21,000 graduate students attending 1,900 postsecondary institutions in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. NPSAS:18-AC also provides state-level estimates for undergraduate students in 30 states. This report describes the percentages of students receiving various types of financial aid and average amounts received, by type of institution attended and institution state (for undergraduate students), and by type of institution, attendance pattern, graduate program, and income level (for graduate students).

The 2017–18 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, Administrative Collection (NPSAS:18-AC) restricted-use data file contains administrative record data on student financial aid, enrollment, demographic characteristics, institution characteristics, and income for approximately 245,000 undergraduate students and 21,000 graduate students attending 1,900 postsecondary institutions in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Data on undergraduate students are nationally representative, as well as state-representative for 30 states overall, 36 states for public 2-year institutions, and 45 states for public 4-year institutions. NPSAS covers topics pertaining to student enrollment with a focus on how individuals and families finance postsecondary education. NPSAS:18-AC is based solely on data collected from administrative data sources and, unlike other NPSAS studies, does not include student survey data.

This publication describes the methods and procedures used for the 2017–18 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, Administrative Collection (NPSAS:18-AC). It also provides information that will be helpful to analysts in accessing and understanding the restricted-use files containing the NPSAS:18-AC data. NPSAS:18-AC includes cross-sectional, nationally representative samples of undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in postsecondary education in the United States. NPSAS:18 AC also includes state-representative samples of undergraduate students in some states, as well as in public 2 year and in public 4 year institution sectors within some states. The study covers topics pertaining to student enrollment with a focus on how individuals and families finance postsecondary education. NPSAS:18-AC is based solely on data collected from administrative data sources and, unlike other NPSAS studies, does not include student survey data.

NCES 2010171REV2 2007-08 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:08) Restricted-Use Data File

The 2007–08 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:08) restricted-use data file contains data on a sample of 114,000 undergraduate students and 14,000 graduate and first-professional students. These students were enrolled between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008 in about 1,730 postsecondary institutions. The data are representative of all undergraduate, graduate, and first professional students enrolled in postsecondary institutions in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico that were eligible to participate in the federal financial aid programs in Title IV of the Higher Education Act. NPSAS focuses on how students and their families pay for postsecondary education and collects a wide range of demographic information about the nation’s postsecondary students.

In 2021, the RUF was converted from the Microsoft Windows-based Electronic Codebook into flat text data files that can be accessed using statistical software syntax. The RUF includes all of the revised weights and derived variables added since the original release of the data.

NCES 2020470 What Is the Price of College? Total, Net, and Out-of-Pocket Prices in 2015–16
This report describes four measures of the price of undergraduate education in the 2015–16 academic year: total price of attendance (tuition and living expenses), net price of attendance after all grants, out-of-pocket net price after all financial aid, and out-of-pocket net price after all aid excluding student loans. Estimates are based on the 2015–16 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:16), a nationally representative study of students enrolled in postsecondary institutions in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Estimates are compared across four institution types: public 2-year institutions, public 4-year institutions, for-profit institutions at all levels (less-than-2-year, 2-year, and 4-year), and private nonprofit 4-year institutions. Prices are also presented separately for dependent and independent students, with these estimates being further separated by income level and institution control and level.

NCES 2020460REV Profile of Very Low- and Low-Income Undergraduates in 2015–16
This Statistics in Brief focuses on two groups of low-income undergraduate students enrolled in U.S. postsecondary institutions in 2015–16: very low- and low-income students, defined as those whose family incomes fell below 50 percent and between 50 and 100 percent, respectively, of the federal poverty level for their family size. This report compares these students’ demographic and enrollment characteristics, financial aid, and price of attendance with those of students whose family incomes were above the federal poverty level. This report draws on data from the 2015–16 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:16).

NCES 2019487 Trends in Pell Grant Receipt and the Characteristics of Pell Grant Recipients: Selected Years, 2003–04 to 2015–16
These tables present data from four administrations of the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (2003–04, 2007–08, 2011–12, and 2015–16) on the percentage of undergraduates who received a Pell Grant and the average amount they received. Data are also presented on the average percentage ratios of Pell Grant amount, grant aid, and total aid to the total price of attendance among Pell Grant recipients, and the percentages of Pell Grant recipients who took out student loans or received state or institutional grants, and the average amounts received from these sources. These data are presented by selected student and enrollment characteristics, such as age, sex, race/ethnicity, dependency status, family income, attendance status, class level, degree program, employment status, parents’ education, and by control and level of institution attended.

These tables present data from four administrations of the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (2003–04, 2007–08, 2011–12, and 2015–16) showing trends in how graduate students financed their education. Data include the demographic attributes and academic characteristics of graduate students and the average price of attendance for the programs in which they were enrolled. The tables provide detail about the proportion of students who received financial aid and the average amounts of various types of aid received, including grants and scholarships, loans, assistantships, and employer aid. The data show trends in the ratio of loans to total aid amount, maximum federal borrowing, and the cumulative indebtedness of graduate students. The data are presented by various demographic and enrollment characteristics, including degree program.

These tables present data from four administrations of the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (2003–04, 2007–08, 2011–12, and 2015–16) on nonfederal grant aid and scholarship aid awarded to undergraduate students. Nonfederal grant and scholarship aid is financial aid awarded by states, institutions, employers, and private organizations. Grants and scholarships, unlike loans, do not need to be repaid and are traditionally awarded on the basis of financial need, merit (e.g., academic or athletic), or a combination of need and merit. Estimates in these tables include the percentage of undergraduates who received nonfederal aid and the average amounts they received, by aid type (need- or merit-based), source (state, institution, or employer), and selected student and institutional characteristics.
