REL 2020018 Guide and Checklists for a School Leader’s Walkthrough during Literacy Instruction in Grades 4–12
This tool was developed to assist school leaders in observing specific research-based practices during literacy instruction in grade 4–12 classrooms and students’ independent use or application of those practices. The tool aims to help school leaders conduct brief and frequent walkthroughs throughout the school year. The tool consists of three parts to be used with students in three grade bands: grades 4 and 5, grades 6–8, and grades 9–12. The first is the Pre-Walkthrough Meeting Guide, for use in all grade bands, to facilitate conversation between school leaders and teachers before the walkthrough. The second is a set of eight walkthrough checklists, differentiated by grade band and classroom type (that is, whole class, English language arts class, content area class, and literacy intervention class), which are based on best practices in literacy instruction. The third is the Post-Walkthrough Meeting Guide, for use in all grade bands, to facilitate debriefing between school leaders and teachers.

REL 2020006 Adoption of, enrollment in, and teacher workload for the Expository Reading and Writing Curriculum in California high schools
The Expository Reading and Writing Curriculum (ERWC) is a college preparatory English language arts course designed to enhance the abilities of students through rhetorical analyses of compelling issues and interesting texts. In order to inform the organizations that support the infrastructure of the ERWC as they seek to make the ERWC more widely available across the state, this study was designed to explore the characteristics of schools that have adopted the ERWC, the characteristics of students enrolled in the course, and the teacher workloads for the course. The study was also intended to inform a wider audience of policymakers and educators who are interested in strengthening postsecondary readiness by expanding opportunities for high school students to take courses similar to the ERWC. This study used two data sources: 1) data collected by the Center for the Advancement of Reading and Writing at the California State University Chancellor’s Office, which includes all the schools that have adopted the ERWC, and 2) data from the California Department of Education, which includes data on all courses taught at California public schools and the demographic characteristics of the students enrolled in each course.

REL 2017219 Rubric for evaluating reading/language arts instructional materials for kindergarten to grade 5
This rubric was developed in response to a request by Improving Literacy Research Alliance members at the Florida Department of Education to be used in their instructional materials review process. It is a tool for evaluating reading/language arts instructional and intervention materials in grades K–5 based on rigorous research and standards. It can be used by practitioners at the state, district, or school level or by university faculty involved in reviewing instructional materials. The rubric is organized by content area for grades K–2 and for grades 3–5. Each item is aligned to recommendations from six What Works Clearinghouse practice guides. Each content area (for example, writing) includes a list of criteria that describe what should be consistently found within the instructional materials. Reviewers use a 1–5 scale to rate the degree to which the criteria were met. The rubric includes a guide for when and how to use it, including facilitator responsibilities, professional learning for reviewers, and ways to use the scores. Alliance members and reading coaches involved in a statewide literacy initiative in Mississippi provided feedback on the rubric.

NCES 2015119 Performance of Fourth-Grade Students in the 2012 NAEP Computer-Based Writing Pilot Assessment
The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) conducted a computer-based pilot writing assessment at grade 4 in 2012, based on the 2011 NAEP writing framework. A key question that this pilot assessment was designed to answer was whether or not fourth-graders could fully demonstrate their writing ability on a computer.

To address this question, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) conducted the present study. Approximately 10,400 fourth-graders from about 510 schools (420 public and 90 private) composed responses to writing tasks reflecting three purposes of writing: to persuade or change the reader’s point of view, to explain or broaden the reader’s understanding of a topic, and to convey an experience—real or imaginary. Fulfillment of these purposes of writing required students to bring forth target skills related to language facility, development of ideas, and organization of ideas. The schools and students participating in this pilot assessment were selected to be representative of all schools nationally.

In addition to the 2012 NAEP grade 4 pilot writing assessment data, this report also refers to the findings of a small-scale usability study conducted in 2011, as well as the 2010 NAEP grade 4 paper-based pilot writing assessment and the 2011 NAEP grade 8 and 12 computer-based writing assessments.
