Accessible Microbiology: Algae Bioprospecting as a Gateway to STEM

NCER
Program: Small Business Innovation Research
Award amount: $250,000
Project director: Matthew Huber
Awardee:
Algae Research and Supply, Inc.
Year: 2025
Award period: 8 months (09/12/2025 - 05/11/2026)
Project type:
Phase I Development
Contract number: 91990025C0094

Purpose

The purpose of this project is to develop a microalgae bioprospecting material and curriculum kit for grades 7-12 to enhance STEM education through hands-on, inquiry-based learning. Algae are critical photosynthesizers that provide a gateway for teaching microbiology and experimental design, yet algae is often absent from formal education settings. This project addresses barriers by creating an accessible, low-cost kit with curriculum aligned to NGSS standards. The kit empowers students to discover new strains of algae, design experiments, and analyze data while developing scientific literacy.

Project Activities

During Phase I, Algae Research and Supply will design and prototype the algae bioprospecting kit, including lab consumables, agar plates for environmental testing, nutrient media, a bench algae light and incubator, and inquiry-based curriculum materials. The team will partner with middle and high school educators to conduct pilot testing in diverse classrooms, focusing on usability, feasibility, and learning outcomes. Activities will include aligning curriculum with pedagogical standards, developing lesson plans and teacher supports, and refining experimental design frameworks. Data collection will consist of surveys, interviews, pre/post student assessments, and classroom observations. Feedback will inform revisions to ensure the prototype is effective, ADA-compliant, and engaging. At the end of Phase I, the project will deliver a classroom-ready prototype supported by pilot evidence, laying the foundation for Phase II development of a citizen science database and a national dissemination strategy.
