Project Activities
During Phase I in 2023, the project team developed a novel prototype of ArtMath, with front-end features including a student interface, a back-end database pool with math content aligned to problem sets for fractions and analysis infrastructure, and an AI story recommendation engine to support students in generated personalized math stories. At the end of Phase I, a pilot test with 69 grade 5 students focusing on fractions, demonstrated that over 3 to 5 sessions the prototype functioned and that math activities were able to be integrated into practice. Results from a pre- to post-test demonstrated that on average students increased in math knowledge in the context of fraction multiplication and division. In addition, student perceptions of the ArtMath were positive, with a majority agreeing or strongly agreeing that they enjoyed and found ArtMath useful for learning new math concepts.
In Phase II of the project, the team will fully develop the product, finalizing the user interface for students and educators, extending the content library to 10 modules covering operations and algebraic thinking topics, and completing the AI-based answer validation system to personalize learning by provided scaffolds with constructive feedback. After development concludes, a pilot study will test the feasibility and usability, fidelity of implementation, and the promise of the product for improving math learning. The team will collect data from 24 grade 4 and 5 classes with 25 students per class for a total of approximately 600 students. Half of the classes will be randomly assigned to use the product and the other half to use business-as-usual activities. Researchers will compare pre-and-post scores using the iReady Diagnostic Assessment in Math to assess student growth on Common Core aligned math standards as well as through researcher developed measures. Researchers will gather cost information using the "ingredients method" and will include all expenditures on things such as personnel, facilities, equipment, materials, and training.

Products and publications
ArtMath will be an AI-powered math learning and creation platform to guide grade and 4 and 5 students in creating stories to make connections between key mathematics concepts through personal and cultural inspirations. Content will focus in mathematical areas that research demonstrates are hard to learn, including conceptual understanding of operations, expression, and equations, and broader application. An educator dashboard will track student learning progression and organize findings to inform progress.
