Authentic Real-World Math Problem Solving in Tyto Online: Probability & Statistics

NCER
Program: Small Business Innovation Research
Award amount: $250,000
Project director: Lindsey Tropf
Awardee:
Immersed Games Inc
Year: 2024
Award period: 8 months (05/01/2024 - 01/02/2025)
Project type:
Phase I Development
Contract number: 91990024C00007

Purpose

In this project, the team will develop a new prototype component of the game focusing on statistics and probability for middle school students. In previous projects supported through ED/IES SBIR and other sources, the team developed Tyto Online, an online game to engage middle school students in real-world problem solving to acquire scientific content knowledge and skills. By incorporating statistics and probabilities, the team aims to address remaining needs in improved math knowledge. The 2022 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) showed declining scores in mathematics, especially in areas focusing on data analysis, statistics, and probability.

Project Activities

The project team will develop a new prototype component, focusing on statistics and probability, to be integrated within the existing Tyto Online. Components will include a set of story-driven quests for students to use data visualizations and real-world statistical problem solving, in-game scaffolds to prompt learning, supplemental materials to facilitate implementation and enhance gameplay, and a results dashboard for educators.  At the end of Phase I, the team will conduct a pilot study with 8 middle school math classes and approximately 200 students. They will examine if the prototype functions and is feasible for classroom use; if students are engaged in mathematical problem solving while engaging with the game mechanics; and if the prototype shows promise for increasing student knowledge and skills of data analysis, statistics, and probability.
