Project Activities
In Phase I, we developed and evaluated a prototype of Capti SBA, a platform that enables teachers to rapidly generate localized, culturally responsive Scenario-Based Assessments through customizable templates, AI-generated content, and an interactive Wizard. Work included creating a research-based SBA framework, developing modular prompts that generate authentic, multistep tasks aligned with Common Core standards, designing a Form Builder for teacher review and revision, and implementing new platform components that support complex SBA structures. A classroom pilot with eighth graders demonstrated that teachers could successfully administer SBAs and that students were engaged and able to complete most tasks within a class period. User-concept testing with teachers and district literacy leaders confirmed strong enthusiasm for automated, curriculum-aligned assessments and highlighted opportunities for enhanced customization and reporting. These insights now guide the product’s evolution toward a scalable tool for culturally sustaining, 21st-century reading assessment.
In Phase II, the project team will design, develop, and test the Capti SBA platform. In Year 1, development will focus on building core platform features, including tools for teachers to create assessments tailored to their students and local curriculum needs. Usability testing will ensure the platform is accessible and intuitive for educators. In Year 2, pilot studies will be conducted to evaluate whether the platform produces high-quality assessments that align with instructional practices and improve student engagement and performance.
